Hatchet Throwing in New Jersey

Hatchet throwing and beer do not mix! Unless, you visit the increasingly popular Stumpy’s Hatchet House in Eatontown, New Jersey.

Stumpy’s Hatchet House, located on Meridian Road, is the first establishment of its kind and is providing its customers with the option to participate in two hour hatchet throwing sessions. Specialized sessions include and are not limited to bachelorette and bachelor parties, corporate parties, birthday parties etc.

Owners, Mark and Trish Oliphant and Stuart and Kelly Josberger, stumbled upon the idea of Stumpy’s after the historic Hurricane Sandy left fallen trees in their backyard. The group designed a hobby out throwing hatchets against stacked cedar tree logs.

A common misconception is that Stumpy’s is a bar. Just to be clear, Stumpy’s is not a bar and does not have alcoholic beverages available for purchase. It does however, allow patrons to bring in their own personal bottles of wine or beer during their sessions.

What are sessions like?

Session’s at Stumpy’s Hatchet House are only available to patrons 21 and older and are coached by a trained and experienced hatchet thrower.

For $40 per person, visitors are taught how to enjoy a two-part session. The first part consists of learning how to properly handle the equipment and the second half involves actual gameplay.

How do you play the game?

Co-owner, Josberger, compares the way the game is played to “darts on steroids”. Patrons can use the point system and also use a bracket elimination if they have enough members in their group.

Hatchet throwing. Is that all?

Stumpy’s also has a few other activities for visitors to try. These activities include a giant jenga set and a huge wooden checkerboard.
